February 2010.
The Gamefishing season has finally arrived and we are now seeing some good captures of Albacore with the fish now wide spread from the Continental Shelf to the inshore fishing grounds around the coast. While most Albacore so far have been small fish around 2 - 3kg, a few have been encountered around 8 - 10kg with the odd 20kg specimen being taken in the last few days.
Striped Tuna are also abundent, and explain a number of recent sightings of Striped Marlin.
All this activity is due to the warm waters currently be experienced on the East Coast, and has the local Gamefishing fleet eagerly awaiting the return of some Yellowfin tuna.
Fishing inshore and offshore reefs is still productive with some good captures of Striped Trumpeter and Morwong offshore, while inshore some big Tiger Flathead (King Flathead to the locals) are being caught in reasonable numbers.
There has also been squid, barracouta and Salmon available around coastal areas and bays.

An Albacore of around 7kg taken on the Continental shelf. A nice sized Tiger Flathead caught inshore on the coast. Even inshore waters are relatively deep with this fish taken in 45 Fathom. A large Albacore around 20kg taken at Hippolyte Rock. |
