30/5/08 Over last few weeks, large Southern Bluefin have been encountered with most captures of fish ranging from 70 - 110kg. The odd School sized Bluefin has also been captured, but most fish being encountered at the moment are the big fish. During the past week we have had three large fish, with two around 90kg, and one around the 100kg mark.
We hooked into a much larger fish earlier on Anzac day with the fight lasting 7 hours. The fish was estimated at 150 - 200kg but the strain on the 24kg line after such a lengthy fight was too much and the line eventually failed with the fish only minutes from being landed.
With all the action being on the big tuna, we havn't done much bottom fishing but morwong and flathead are still plentiful in places.

(Top) Large Southern Bluefin Tuna around 90kg. This fish was captured by an experienced angler using a Shimano Stella Threadline reel loaded with 37kg braid, and matching Shimano rod. A challenge to accomplish this feat was taken up and proved to be quite a remarkable catch.
(Bottom) Another big Bluefin captured near "O'hara Bluff" only a couple of nautical miles from Pirates Bay. This fish fell victim early in the morning and took only 40 minutes to land. The fight for these big brutes normally last for a few hours and a lot of fish are lost during the battle.
